After four straight double-digit winning seasons in Cincinnati, the Bengals have had back-to-back disappointing seasons. A 6-9-1 record in 2016 was followed by a 7-9 season in 2017. Despite those outcomes, head coach Marvin Lewis held onto his job despite rumors to the contrary. A 2-0 finish to the end of the season certainly helped his cause.
The problem in recent years for the Bengals has been their inconsistent offense. Last season the Bengals finished 26th in points scored after being just 24th in 2016. A year after letting left tackle Andrew Whitworth and guard Kevin Zeitler leave in free agency, the Bengals continue to have problems along their offensive line that makes scoring difficult. Center Russell Bodine and right tackle Andre Smith are both set to be free agents. Being perfectly honest, the team isn't exactly broken up about some of their own leaving in free agency.
The Bengals biggest need and most difficult job will be overhauling their offensive line this offseason. As many as three positions will need starting-quality replacements. And that's assuming that the team will give left tackle Cedric Ogbuehi another season after he played poorly in 2017.
The Bengals do have other needs. They'd like to find another tight end and add some depth to their linebackers and defensive back field. But unless the Bengals fix their problems up front on offense, the same problems can be expected to continue.
Offensive Ranking: 32nd
Defensive Ranking: 18th
Key Free Agents:
Tyler Eiffert - TE - Has played in just two games over the past two seasons due to injuries. Eiffert's back injury has continued to keep him off the field.
Jeremy Hill - RB - Recorded just 3.1 yards per carry in 2017 while dealing with an ankle injury. Expected to reach free agency. 25 years old.
Russell Bodine - C - A consistent starter at center in part because of a lack of options. The franchise did not take any part in contract extension talks with Bodine.
Andre Smith - RT/G - Signed a one year deal last offseason and started at right tackle before an injury ended his season.
Kevin Minter - LB - Played in nine games before his season ended due to injury. Should still draw interest from other teams if he reaches free agency.
Potential Cuts/Restructures:
Adam Jones - CB - The Bengals hold a club option on Jones' contract. The 34 year old cornerback has served as the slot corner in recent seasons. Cap savings: $5.7M
